West High Panthers – Retired Numbers

West High School, originally known as Salt Lake High School, is the oldest high school in the state of Utah founded in 1890.

Jeff Bruner 1998-2000 Utah

Special Olympics Area and Invitational Games 13 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze.  During the World Games won 1 Gold and 2 Bronze medals.  During the Utah games, 13 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 Bronze medals.


#4 Dick Nemelka 

Had an amazing high school career as Student Body President, All-State in baseball 1962, basketball, and football.  Became an All-American in high school basketball.  Played for Brigham Young University and became an All-American in academics and in basketball.  Professionally played for the Utah Stars from 1970-1971.


#10 Scott Runia

Two time All-State selection in basketball, 3 time starter becoming an High School All-American basketball player.  In high school, won Tournament of Champions in 1975, M.V.P. of basketball in Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune in 1975.  Played at Brigham Young University as a 4 year starter and WAC All Conference.

In 1980-1981 West Outstanding Volleyball Player, 81-82 West Outstanding Basketball Player, West Athlete Player of the Year, 1st Team All-State Basketball Team, West Outstanding Softball Player.

In 82-83 1st Team All-State Volleyball Player, 2nd Team All State Basketball Team, West Outstanding Basketball Player, West Athlete Player of the Year, and All- American. Holds Game records from 1983 100% free throw vs. Murray HS, Field Goal attempts vs. South HS, Field- goals made 15 vs. South, Murray, Viewmont, Tooele, Total Points vs. Viewmont at 37.  Additionally in 1983, she had 80 Assists, 169 Free Throw attempts, 113 Free Throws made, 524 Field Goal attempts, 219 Field Goals made and 531 Total Points.

In 78-79, selected all region 3 Linebacker, Special Team’s Leader, 4A State Runner-ups 10-2-0, Defensive Starter OLB-MLB, Region 3 Champs 5-1-0, Player of the Week vs. Skyline, Outstanding Sophomore of the Year, Golden Helmet Award vs. Skyline LB, America’s Outstanding Names and Faces for football.

In 79-80, Offensive Guard, Most Turnover’s Award, All-Region MLB-Region 5, All-State Deseret News LB, America’s High School Athlete Awards, Golden Helmet Award West vs. Logan-LB, Hatchet Award Offensive Defensive Points Winner, All-State Salt Lake Tribune Offensive Lineman, Defensive-MLB-Kicker,-Field Goals-Extra Points, Region 5 Champs 5-0-0 State 3A Runner-ups 10-2-0.

1990-1994 Jeff Holtry

West’s Jeff Holtry, who hardly missed a play in three years of prep action, catches passes as a tight end, sacks quarterbacks as a defensive end, kicks off, boots field goals, makes the long snap on punts and probably sells popcorn at halftime “Mike Sorenson”. As a freshman, Special Teams Leader, Skull and BONES Awards, Honorable Mention All-Region, Player of the Week West vs Granite, Positions Guard-Kickoffs-Linebacker-Long Snaps.

In 91-92 as a sophomore, Football Award, 1st Team All-Region, 2nd Team All-State Deseret News, Player of the Week vs. Jordan Honorable Mention All-State Salt Lake Tribune, Positions, Extra Points,-Field Goals-Fullback-Guard-Kickoffs-Linebacker-Long Snaps.

In 92-93 Junior Hatcher Award, M.V.P Award Region VI, 1st Team All-Region, Honor Roll-USA Today, State Champions 13-0, Prep of the Week- Salt Lake Tribune, Region VI Champions 7-0, 3A All-State M.V.P.-Salt Lake Tribune|Deseret News, Utah Player of the Year-U.S.A. Today, America’s Names and Faces Football, High Point Winner vs. Pleasant Grove, Touchdown Club of America-Linebacker of the Year, Honorable Mention All-American Coaches Magazine, Positions Defensive End, Extra Points, Field Goals, Kickoffs, Long Snaps, Tight End.

As a Senior in 93-94 Holtry accepted a full ride scholarship to University of Michigan taking every award possible.  He later transferred to Brigham Young University He was Team Captain, 1st Team All-Region, Who’s Who in Sports, Super Prep All-American, Hatcher|Star Award, Region Champions 4-0 Overall 10-1 with 23 consecutive wins, Street and Smith All-American, Gatorade Player of the Year, Blue Chip Illustrated All-American, 4A All-State M.VP. Salt Lake Tribune|Deseret News, G.P.A. 3.5 graduating with Honors, Super Prep|Blue Chip Pre-Season All-American, America’s Names and Faces-Football, Player of the Week vs. Olympus. Recruited by over 6- Division I Schools, High Point Winner Offense|Defense, Region VII Defensive Player of the Year. Positions Defensive End-Extra Points|Field Goals|Kickoffs|Long Snaps-Tight End.
