The West High School (SLC) Administrative Team and Athletic Department are excited to announce the appointment of Mr. Duane Bourdeaux. As the new head Varsity Boys basketball coach. Mr. Bourdeaux is a successful product of the Salt Lake City School District including being a graduate of West High School where he was a member of the basketball team who progressed to the State semifinal against Mountain View High School, folding at the sound of the final buzzer. So, for Coach Bourdeaux, it is surreal to come back to his high school Alma mater as a school counselor and now as the Head Boys Basketball Coach. This exemplifies the love and passion that he has for his community.
After graduating from West High, Mr. Bourdeaux continued his education at the University of Utah completing his Bachelor of Science degree. He furthered his education which included a master’s degree in Counseling and the Health and Violence Prevention certification through Harvard University. Mr. Bourdeaux is currently employed with the Salt Lake City School District as a school Counselor at West High School. Mr. Bourdeaux previously served for 10 years as a Utah State Legislator serving the west side of Salt Lake City. His professional experience also includes being a business owner/lobbyist/consultant for more than 25 years.
Coach Bourdeaux has spent the last two years serving as Head Junior Varsity Boys team and lead Assistant for the Varsity Boys team. He also has more than 25 years of experience in coaching youth and young adults in the sport of basketball. He has a proven track record of putting students first. Comparatively, he prides himself on the ability to surround student athletes with knowledgeable, high character coaches who embody his programs core values of integrity, passion, and humility. His coaching background coupled with his leadership experience in social behavior has helped prepare him for the new role as Head Basketball coach at West High School. Coach Bourdeaux will bring a wealth of basketball knowledge and experience to the program at West High School. Coach Boudeaux’s passion and enthusiasm for the game of basketball is contagious.
Coach Bourdeaux has coined this quote which sums up his philosophy…Programs don’t change kids, relationships, do. He is very excited to work with all the students and parents, in this new role. Our student-athletes are fortunate to have him as their head coach. Coach Bourdeaux enjoys the support from his family which includes his wife Kristine, two children, and one grandchild.
